Certifications, and what they cover

These certifications belong to the film, not to us, and we would rather be exact about that. Several apply to particular product families rather than the whole range, so this page tells you which, including where the answer is less convenient.

Fire safety

What happens if there is a fire in the room.

B1 flame retardant (SCFRI)

China’s B1 grade for decorative building materials, tested by the Sichuan Fire Research Institute. Products that pass are marked and sold as B1.

Scope: Test reports are published for Solid, Wood, Classic Wood, Premium Wood, Elreina, Metal and Polished Metal.

CE marking

The EU safety standard. Covers flame-spread performance, and additionally formaldehyde and heavy-metal testing.

Scope: European conformity for the product range.

UL 723

Flame spread and smoke development, tested by UL. This is the rating that matters once you are covering a large wall area rather than a cabinet door.

Scope: Tested and certified by UL.

People

What the material emits, and what it is safe to be near.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100, class 1

Around 200 harmful substances tested. Class 1 is the tier used for products in contact with babies and children under three, the same standard applied to infant clothing and toys.

Scope: The catalogue states this class 1 result for the plain solid-colour BENIF products, described as an industry first.

Healthy Building Material (HB)

Korean Air Cleaning Association standard for harmful-substance emissions from building materials, awarded at the top grade.

Scope: Not every model holds this certification, and food-contact safety was not tested. Ask us before specifying it for a food-preparation surface.

Atopy, heavy metal, TVOC and non-phthalate reports

Separate test reports covering skin sensitivity, heavy-metal content, volatile organic compounds and phthalate content.

Scope: Published as individual test reports rather than as a certification mark.

Environment

What it costs to make, and what happens at the end.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

A full life-cycle assessment covering raw materials, production, distribution, use and disposal, verified under the Korean scheme.

Scope: Held by BENIF Wood.

Low-carbon product certification

Awarded where a product’s carbon footprint falls below the average for its category, or achieves a minimum reduction against it.

Scope: Held by BENIF Solid.

Carbon footprint certification

The measured footprint behind the low-carbon award, certified by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute.

Scope: Published alongside the EPD.

Why we list the limits

It would be easier to put seven logos in a row and let you assume they all apply to everything. They do not, and the manufacturer’s own catalogue is explicit about it. If you are specifying this material for a school, a clinic, a childcare centre or a commercial fit-out, the scope is the part you actually need.
